"Up, Up, and Away!" with Air Solutions!!
Airsolutions has recently been involved with the supply of Powerpax chillers for several projects in the CBD and Nth Sydney business districts

  • Zurich Insurance: 2 x PPW 440, 400 kwr water cooled chillers
  • 80 Alfred Street: 1 x PPW 500, 500 kwr water cooled chiller
  • 10 Spring Street: 1 x PPW 940-3, 900 kwr water cooled chiller

The Powerpax products were selected due to the high energy savings that the magnetic bearing Turbocor compressor offers building owners and operators over conventional electric chillers

"2 Market" "2 Market" with Air Solutions!!
Back in the April 2006, Climate Control News reported on our success in being selected as the supplier of a unique package of air conditioning-related equipment for the new IKEA facility at Logan, Queensland. Well, we have done it again!

Air Solutions has since accepted an order for a similar package for the Sydney CBD project, 2 Market Street. The package again includes the enormously successful PowerPax chiller sets - Australian made and incorporating the Australian designed Turbocor centrifugal compressors with their electro-magnetic bearings and resultant oil-less refrigeration systems. The rest of the package is comprised of 379-off Halton passive beams plus Halton swirl-type air diffusers. As with the IKEA project, Air Solutions was able to demonstrate to the mechanical contractor the significant benefits of working with a single source for these major system components.

The successful mechanical contractor in this instance is Tilley Air Conditioning Pty Ltd of Brookvale. Founded by Bill Tilley in 1993, the company offers great versatility, stability, reliability and know-how to its clients.

The consulting engineer for the mechanical services is the Sydney office of Arup, the worldwide consultancy practice based in London, England.

The Arup design called for two equal sized water cooled centrifugal chillers, each of 480kW capacity, having the model no. PPW500-2E. Each machine incorporates two equal sized compressors operating on individual circuits and thus providing substantial redundancy to the system. The consultant clearly specified the type, as the project, like so many Australia's CBDs these days, demanded high Coefficients of Performance. Quality designers now recognize that central plant equipment spends very little time running at full load. The White Paper on American ARI Standard 550/590-98 (Standard for Water Chilling Packages Using the Vapour Compression Cycle) indicates the way that thinking has been modified. The table below quantifies this thinking:-

% Load 1992 Standard 1998 Standard
100% 17% 1%
75% 39% 42%
50% 33% 45%
25% 11% 12%

As a consequence, designs such as Arup's are looking more and more towards the concept of Integrated Part Load Value, or IPLV, as a single part load efficiency number. ARI developed an equation to provide a representation of the part load efficiency of equipment such as water chiller sets. Extensive computer analysis was used to model chillers applied in various geographic regions and applications. The use of IPLV provides a single method of evaluation. It tends to render redundant claims of high efficiency at 100% load. The PowerPax chillers for 2 Market Street offer the following efficiencies:-

100% 75% 50% 25% IPLV
5.4 7.2 10.9 10.4 9.25

Critically, performance values like this are unlikely to change over time, as there is no oil in the system to gradually coat heat exchange surfaces and no bearing wear due to the use of electro-magnetic bearings.

Matching the skill and efficiency of PowerPax, the Halton CPT passive chilled beams were carefully selected to handle the requirements of 2 Market Street's ceiling design. Much exchange of information along these lines took place between Arup, Air Solutions, and the company's principal, Halton Oy of Finland. Halton is a market leader in chilled beam technology, an indication of its status in the global market lies in the fact that it has been awarded the supply contract for the huge Queen Anne's Gate development in London. This building will utilise a revolutionary multi-service beam that incorporates dual heat exchangers and air supply, along with a multiplicity of services such as lighting, smoke alarm, power distribution, and so on. The illustrations below show a similar type in another Halton installation.

The management of Air Solutions is delighted with the progress the company has made in successfully delivering these unique equipment packages to the Australian air conditioning industry. The company's chairman, Paul Mascall, says "We always believed that our customer base would react favourably to the benefits presented by an important equipment package such as we can offer. Led by the PowerPax chiller, and supported by the technical expertise of the Melbourne-based manufacturer, Boronia Technologies, we are moving forward into many similar opportunities".

Air Solutions proudly introduces the SmartPump
Air Solutions are proud to unveil the SmartPump range of close control air conditioners. Built locally in Queensland & built to last, the SmartPump range currently extends to an efficient 4 compressor unit with a combined refrigeration capacity in excess of 200kW and supply fan handling over 4000 L/s of even the most tropical air. Primarily designed to cool, dehumidify & control (re)heat outside air introduced into tropical supermarkets, the SmartPump suits any humidity and temperature controlled application where packaged air conditioners are used. More recently reverse cycle heating has been added so the SmartPump can now head further south! Customers already include the Queensland Government, Coles & Action supermarkets. Standard features include corrosion treated coils, low TD condenser sizing, powder-coated aluminium panels & frame, R407c scroll compressors, EC motor driven variable speed condenser fans & plenty of design flexibility to suit your specific needs.
